133rd Passage

David decided it would be fun to build a fire pit. When David decides it will be fun to build something, that something always gets built without much delay. Since we hadn't been proactive with a garden this year we had a place to put it.

David read about a keyhole shaped fire pit for cooking. You build the fire in the round part and cook in the square part with the coals the fire creates. You pull coals from the fire when you need them and control the temperature that way.

We did this after baseball games before it got dark. And often after it got dark. Allison was usually the only child outside keeping us company.
We also got really lucky. A lady in the neighborhood just removed some grass from her yard and wanted it gone. We picked it up and it ended up being about exactly the amount of sod we needed to fill in the rest of the garden area.
The first use it got was just for roasting marshmallows. We invited David's parents' over for that.

The next time we used it to cook dinner. We used the dutch oven for the first time. It was super delicious.

We tried another recipe in the dutch oven over the coals. This time it didn't work so well, so we got out the rocket stove to finish cooking the soup. The rocket stove worked great. But the food wasn't that awesome.

I'm sure we'll be doing more experimenting as the summer progresses.
